Special Areas is a unique rural municipal area, covering some 2.1 million hectares of southeast Alberta. Established in 1938 because of extreme rural hardship during the Great Depression, the Special Areas provide municipal services and long-term land resource management. Special Area 2 is based in Hanna, Special Area 3 in Oyen and Special Area 4 in Consort. The region boasts many charming community museums and small galleries. Communities in Special Areas: Cereal, Consort, Empress, Hanna, Oyen, Veteran, Youngstown.
